The Port Orford Rotary Scholarship Endowment Fund
Current value - $100,620

The Port Orford Rotary Foundation was established in May 1994 as a non profit 501(c)3 organization by the Rotary Club of Port Orford to assist, encourage and promote the welfare and well-being of the greater Port Orford area with particular emphasis on establishing post high school scholarships assisting local students achieve higher education and training.

The first fund established was the Port Orford Scholarship Fund to provide a permanent base from which interest could be taken each year to provide scholarships to post high school students. In addition, Rotarians have raised monies to give in scholarships each year starting with $500 the first year to $10,000 in 2006.

High School Seniors at Pacific High School or home school senior level students living in the 2CJ School District area can obtain the applications from the Pacific High School counselor or online via the Port Orford-Langlois school district website.  The selection is made by the Port Orford Rotary Scholarship committee and each application is reviewed in the following areas: need, activities, community service and leadership.  These scholarships may be used for academic or professional/technical education at any accredited post-high school educational institution.  Payment is made directly to the institution upon verification of enrollment.

The levels of giving are Perpetual Named Scholarships ($15,000 or more), Rotary Benefactor ($5000 or more), and  Rotary Fellow ($1000 or more). All gifts are tax deductible.  Donors are recognized by name on a prominent plaque displayed at Pacific High School and with receipt of a handsome crystal stone pin. In addition donors may participate in the scholarship fund by remembering Port Orford Rotary Foundation in their will.

    International Service
    Guatemala Water Project - 2007
This is a project of the Florence and Eugene Southtowne clubs, partnering with the Guatemala Sur club.  The project purchases water purification systems consisting of a cleanable ceramic filter in two five gallon containers (see photo at left).  Each unit costs $50.

We have donated $500 towards the project.  With the new district matching formula, our $500 is matched 150% by the district and 200% by Rotary International, making our $500 contribution into $2250.  That will buy water systems for 45 families.

Read more on the project on the Florence Rotary Club website (PDF file).

Dominican Republic Computer Classroom - 2006
The Club donated $500 to a project of the Rotary Club of Scott Valley.  The peoject created a virtual classroom at the Maria Josefa Gomez school in Salcedo, complete with 20 computers, printer and internet access, as well as desks and chairs.  The host club is Club Rotario Salcedo.
